PICL Coaches Council Certifies 20 New NICA Coaches in OTB 101

On Sunday August 26th at Lorimer Park in Montgomery County the PICL Coaches Council instructors ran a half-day On-The-Bike 101 Skills instruction program certifying 20 coaches for OTB 101. OTB 101 is an important step for many coaches on their way to Level 2 NICA certification.

The OTB101 program consists of an introductory session about NICA coaching philosophy, practice basics & an overview of how to structure and execute an effective practice, followed by an on-the-bike portion. The programs wraps up with a demonstration of integrating skills with bike games as well as an example “short course”.

During the on-the-bike portion, coaches learn about the “Three Key Essentials” (level pedals, fingers on the brakes and head up/eyes forward) as well as the core skills program:

  • Neutral Position
  • Ready Position
  • Braking
  • Bike/Body Separation – front to back
  • Bike/Body Separation – side to side
  • Intro to Cornering
  • Shifting
  • Climbing – seated
  • Climbing – crouched
  • Climbing – standing

Coaches were also asked to “teach-back” their brand new skills to other coaches. All coaches who participated in the session received an OTB 101 Field Guide.
