2026 Coach Retreat: Champion Teammate

At PICL, we believe championships are built on more than podiums.

Inspired by the book The Champion Teammate by John O'Sullivan and Jerry Lynch, this theme challenges us to think beyond individual performance. True champions don’t just excel on their own — they elevate everyone around them.

That’s the culture we’re building across Pennsylvania.

More Than Racing

Mountain biking may look like an individual sport, but no rider succeeds alone. Champion teammates:

  • Encourage and support at practice

  • Help others grow in confidence and skill

  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes

  • Contribute to trail stewardship and community

  • Lead with humility

This mindset extends beyond bikes and race weekends. It shapes how athletes show up in school, at home, and in their communities.

Bringing the Theme to Life

We were honored to have John O’Sullivan keynote the 2025 PICL Coach Retreat in Danville, where he shared practical strategies for building team cohesion, belonging, and athlete-centered coaching cultures.

His message was clear: Coaches don’t just develop stronger riders — they develop stronger teammates.

To continue the conversation, John will also join us for the 2026 PICL Coach Retreat as well as for an episode of PICL Presents…diving deeper into how coaches, athletes, and parents can apply these principles throughout the season.

Why This Matters

As PICL grows, culture matters more than ever. The Champion Teammate mentality ensures that:

  • New riders feel welcomed

  • Teams grow stronger together

  • Competition remains healthy and supportive

  • Leadership is modeled at every level

It’s not just about who crosses the finish line first. It’s about who we become together along the way.
